Gellung Warl warmly congratulates Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation on entering onto the Treaty Authority’s Negotiations Register.

Last month, Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation reached a significant milestone as Traditional Owners in their Treaty journey with the State of Victoria. This milestone reflects years of Community leadership and a commitment to the self-determined aspirations of Wamba Wemba people and their Country.

This follows Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation becoming the first Traditional Owner group to gain a reserved seat on the First Peoples’ Assembly through a historic, self-determined additional pathway.

Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation describes their Traditional Country as comprising the lands and waters of north-west of Victoria and the south-west of New South Wales and stretching across the Murray River. The Wamba Wamba/Wemba Wemba Nation are a Traditional Owner collective connected through shared ancestry, culture, kinship and enduring responsibilities to Country.

‘It brings me great pleasure to see Wamba Wemba entering onto the Treaty Negotiation Register in pursuit of restorative justice of our lands, waters, plants and animals.’ – Jason Kelly, Gellung Warl Member for North West region

This milestone opens a pathway for Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Group, as Traditional Owners, to form a Treaty Delegation, which can comprise other Traditional Owner groups in the same Country, to negotiate agreements involving land, water, natural resources and economic opportunity.

‘Statewide Treaty recognises that each Nation’s ties to Country is unique and specific to their shared stories and aspirations for Community. Traditional Owner treaties allow for Nation-led negotiations that reflect their cultural authority over their lands and waters… Commencing this Treaty journey marks a significant milestone for Wamba Wemba peoples pursuing outcomes that reflect their Country.’ – Djaran Murray-Jackson, Co-chair, Member for Metro region

Victoria’s Treaty process enables nation-to-nation treaties, in collaboration with a Traditional Owner Treaty Delegation and the State, creating a framework that allows Traditional Owner groups to negotiate outcomes that reflect their unique histories, cultures, and aspirations for Country and Community.

Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation has become the 8th Traditional Owner group to enter the Treaty Authority’s Negotiations Register and commence the next phase of their unique path to Treaty.
