Gellung Warl congratulates the Deputy Premier, Gabrielle Williams MP, on her appointment as the Minister for First Peoples.
The Deputy Premier previously served as the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs from 2020 to 2022, and later as Minister for Treaty and First Peoples from 2022 to October 2023.
As the Minister responsible for these portfolios, she played a pivotal role in establishing the Yoorrook Justice Commission alongside the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria. In addition, she worked with the Assembly to create the Treaty Negotiation Framework, which would go on to guide the agreement of Australia’s first Treaty.
Gabrielle Williams MP was also one of the Government Ministers who provided a submission to Yoorrook, acknowledging the system injustices First Peoples face, and the intergenerational effects they have today.
